Why is PC-CUPS relevant to me?

Because we design and develop efficient, environmentally safe and innovative catalytic and nano-chemical hydrocarbon production and conversion solutions for heavy oil.


At the university of Calgary, Dr. Pedro Pereira Almao and a group of Researchers developed the In-Situ Upgrading Technology, or “ISUT”, and the CatSKID, an online unit used in the ISUT process and required to commercially implement this technology among others.


What's In-Situ, CatSKID and what can I do with that?

In-Situ Upgrading Technology (ISUT), is not a conventional thermal recovery process. It may entirely eliminate the energy and emissions-heavy step of surface upgrading required in SAGD recovery, by taking that upgrading step off the surface and putting it underground, in the reservoir itself, by coupling production and upgrading into a single step. ISUT™ is in-situ (in-the-reservoir) upgrading that converts low API, low mobility, extra heavy oils – such as oil sands bitumen (typically 8-10° API) – into lighter oil (20-25° API) similar to medium gravity crudes, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions by over 30%.


ISUT most important novelty is the co-injection of vacuum residue with dispersed nano-catalyst to a reservoir, which is produced inline using the CatSKID , which is the vital unit for the ISUT technology, is a portable “nano-catalyst factory” capable of producing inline nano-catalysts. The dispersed nano-catalyst will adhere to the reservoir rock, generating a “fixed bed reactor” surrounding the injection well.


After 2-3 months of injecting catalyst into the reservoir, the in-situ reactor is established and catalyst injection is discontinued, enabling the CatSKID to be redeployed at another producing well pair.
